Accessible care starts with accessible communication.

QR-BSL Health

Many Deaf patients use BSL, not English. Without BSL translation, critical health information may be misunderstood or missed entirely. The Accessible Information Standard, a legal requirement since 2016, applies to all NHS and social care services in England. Services are expected to ask what the communication need is, record it, flag it, share it and act on it.

QR-BSL Health helps you meet your legal obligations and provide informed, safe and inclusive care for everyone.

QR-BSL Health process

Given the importance of terminology and person-centred ethos within health and especially mental health, we work in tandem with you to ensure the content is specifically tailored to your client. We also ensure we provide a thorough translation and back translation process. QR-BSL Health translation may require more refinements and verification and is a more detailed process.

We translate patient documentation such as:

  • Appointment letters
  • Patient result letters
  • Patient leaflets
  • Consent forms including DNR, pre-op and more
  • Treatment plans
  • Individual procedures
  • Blood tests
  • Mental health outcome letters
  • Assessment outcomes
  • Mental Health tribunal procedures
  • Care Act assessments
  • Social service decision letters
  • Social service letters
  • Any information you wish to provide to the patient to improve their health, social care and wellbeing
  • Initial meeting

Initial meeting to discuss your requirements, including timescales, branding, intended audience and overall aim of the translation.

  • Accessible

If necessary, we create an accessible format (easy read) of the document before translation. We will work with you to determine the type of format required.

  • Accuracy

The accessible document is returned to you for accuracy and verification checks.

  • Approval and BSL translation

Once we have received approval of the accessible document, we translate it into BSL.

  • Back translation

If requested (and at additional cost) the complete BSL video is sent to our specialists for back translation into written English.

  • Translation approval

We provide you with the English back translation to compare against the original document.

  • Final Video

Once confirmed, we either supply the original video for your in-house editing team or we provide a final edited video that aligns with your branding inclusive of logos.

  • QR code

On approval of the final video, we will generate the QR that links directly to the BSL video allowing you to embed this into your original document.
